APPLICATIONS OPEN FOR $1 MILLION IN FUNDING FROM THE CHICAGO REGION FOOD SYSTEM FUND

***40 Grants of $25,000 Each Available to Address Continuing COVID-19-Related Impacts on Chicago’s Food System***

(Chicago, IL – January 25, 2022) In the wake of the surge of COVID-19 cases, The Chicago Region Food System Fund continues its emergency funding to get resources to the field quickly in response to the Omicron variant. CRFSF will award 40 grants for $25,000 each, totaling $1,000,000, to organizations able to deploy them rapidly to address hunger and business disruption. Originally planned as a series of grant rounds in 2020 and early 2021, the Fund will continue its grantmaking throughout 2022. 

Nonprofits, businesses with nonprofit partners, and organizations without 501(c)(3) status with nonprofit partners or fiscal sponsors are eligible to apply. CRFSF prioritizes organizations that are BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) led, defined as greater than 50% BIPOC board and leadership. Funding decisions are anticipated to be announced by March 4.

“Like so many, we had hoped to move forward from the first waves of the pandemic to support visionary transformation grounded in what so many community stakeholders learned. But once again, we see the need to adapt quickly.  Not only is this pandemic not over, but more people are falling sick to COVID-19 now than ever before,” said Karen Lehman, Director, Fresh Taste. “Family businesses, long-lived restaurants, and farms that were able to withstand the first two years of the pandemic are being battered by the disruptions caused by Omicron. Many are shutting down temporarily for the first time or finally deciding to close their doors for good. These impacts will ripple through our local food system for years to come, affecting growers, food workers, and communities.”

Since June 2020, the Chicago Region Food System Fund has distributed a total of $8,417,150 to 105 grantees. The Chicago Region Food System Fund focuses on COVID-19 related response and building resilience in the local food system, an area approximately 200 miles from Chicago (about a day’s drive to/from the city). Priority has been given to organizations producing food in, and supplying food to, communities of color. Fresh Taste, fiscally sponsored by Forefront, manages the Fund.
